Preface
Each year British Columbia’s coastal forest industry uses approximately 15 million metres (50 million feet) of log bundling strand, galvanized wire-rope used to keep log bundles together while being transported in coastal waters. Once the logs reach the mills, the bundles are broken and the strand typically discarded. Until recently, recycling options for this material were very limited. Consequently, less than 3.4 million metres (12 million feet) of strand were recycled annually. The remaining 11.6 million metres (38 million feet) were often discarded in British Columbia’s coastal waterways. This amount of waste is not only environmentally inappropriate; it can adversely affect a company’s bottom line.

Environment Canada’s Log Bundling Strand Recycling Initiative is a government–industry collaborative effort which included support from Fisheries and Oceans Canada, the forest industry, log bundling strand producers, recycling companies, and dredging contractors. While specific interests differ, the common objective is to provide industry with tools and incentives to ensure that log bundling strand is handled in an economically viable and environmentally responsible manner.

This initiative seeks to promote the benefits of recovering and recycling log bundling strand, leading to measurable results in quantities recycled rather than discarded. Environment Canada has developed this document to supplement the Log Bundling Strand Recycling Initiative video and companion poster.
