2018 BC Wood Design Awards a Great Success!

Another year, another amazing display of innovative wood design! Wood WORKS! BC celebrated the 14th year of the BC Wood Design Awards with an impressive lineup of beautiful wood designs and wood construction from across the province.

An animated crowd of guests including architects and engineers, industry, government and media joined nominees at the Vancouver Convention Centre, itself a beautiful example of wood design. Lynn Embury-Williams, Executive Director for Wood WORKS! BC enlightened the audience on the amazing technological advances revolutionizing the way we build with wood, applauding the mastery that the architects, designers, and engineers have demonstrated using the sustainable material.

Nominations spanned 14 categories, celebrating innovative architecture, new and advanced building technologies, and sustainable wood construction. Judges Kristin Slavin, AIA, LEED BD+C, Path Architecture; Brian McClure, P.Eng., Struct.Eng., Senior Structural Engineer/Partner, Sorensen Trilogy; and Coast Forest Products Association’s own Susan Gagnon, Vice President, Communications & Research selected stand-out projects from the 100 nominees. Each of the winning structures exemplified the ingenuity of wood, either as a construction material, as an aesthetic choice, or both!

Among this year’s winners were Kevin Mahon of Adera Development Corporation, winner of the Wood Champion award, and Russell Acton of Acton Ostry Architects Inc., winning the Architect Award for Brock Commons at UBC. In fact, Brock Commons won three awards overall, including the Wood Innovation Award, also going to Acton Ostry, and the Engineer Award, a shared win by Fast + Epp and GHL Consultants Ltd. Over the years, Coast Forest has had the express pleasure of sponsoring the Wood Design Awards. Once again, we are honoured to extend sincere congratulations to all the nominees and winners.

Big news! Coast Forest and COFI have come together as one
organization for a stronger, unified voice for BC's forest industry.
