Reflections on a Year Past – And a New Voice for a New Year

2017 was a year when British Columbia’s coastal forest industry was re-affirmed, once again, as an important cornerstone sector to growing BC’s strong and sustainable economy.  A new economic study by PwC found that $12.9 billion of our province’s GDP comes from forestry with government receiving $4 billion in tax revenue every year from the sector.  It also found that 140,000 British Columbians rely on forestry for their jobs with the stability of 140 BC communities dependent on a healthy industry.

BC’s Largest-Ever Forestry Trade Mission to Asia a Success

This fall, Coast Forest joined Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development Minister Doug Donaldson on BC’s largest-ever forestry trade mission to Asia. Along with 30+ delegates from across British Columbia’s forest industry, Coast Forest met with key government and industry players in China and Japan, working to expand markets, enhance relationships, and raise the value of BC wood products.

Malahat Nation and TimberWest Renew Memorandum of Understanding (MoU)

Malahat Nation and TimberWest Forest Corp. renewed their Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that reaffirms both parties to their commitment to partner on cultural, environmental and economic opportunities around existing initiatives and future forestry operations.

“Working with the Malahat Nation over the past four years on conservation initiatives and mutual business opportunities, has led to a number of positive projects and outcomes,” says Jeff Zweig, President and CEO of TimberWest. “The renewal of our MOU signifies the strength of our relationship and the good work we have accomplished. Shíshálh Nation and Interfor sign historic relationship agreement

The shíshálh Nation and Interfor Corporation announced they have signed a five-year agreement that will guide how the two entities work together to log the Nation’s traditional swiya (territory).

“This is 20 years in the making – we’re just lucky enough to be the ones signing the agreement,” said Chief Warren Paull. Interfor has tenures that cover 179,000 ha, located within the shíshálh Nation’s swiya.
