Emerging Markets: Expanding India Attracts Interest

Growing market of 1.2 billion people ‘reminds me of China 12 years ago,’ forestry official says.

Jas Binning exported $25,000 worth of softwood lumber to India in 2006 with  the hopes the move would compensate for a slowing North American market. “I  started with small volume,” said the owner of Abbotsford’s Jazz Forest Products. “Now (we’re) shipping close to a half-million dollars every month.”

B.C. seeks to diversify Asia wood exports

B.C.’s annual forest products trade mission to Asia is finding slower growth in the Chinese market, but increasing use of higher-value products such as oriented strandboard.

Forests Minister Steve Thomson and 25 B.C. forest products executives are visiting Shanghai and Beijing this week, after a stop in Japan to meet with government and industry officials. Thomson signed letter of intent with China’s Zhejiang province to develop wood frame building, in a rapidly urbanizing country that has traditionally used concrete.

B.C.’s lumber exports to China surge

Lumber exports to China are on track to surpass last year’s near-record $1.08 billion, and Japanese sales are rebounding as well, as British Columbia continues to push wood products up the value chain.

By the end of August, the latest B.C. government figures available, the value of lumber exports to China had hit $899 million, 32-per-cent higher than the same period in 2012.

B.C. signs wood agreement with China’s Zhejiang province

The British Columbia government has signed an agreement with Zhejiang province in China to promote the use of wood frame construction.

Under the “strategic co-operation” agreement, B.C. and Zhejiang will work together to share technical knowledge and to change building and fire codes in the Chinese province to allow for more wood to be used in buildings.
