Federal Budget Supports Forestry in Tough Economic Times

Coast Forest Products Association commends the Government of Canada for maintaining spending on programs aimed at transforming the forest sector even while tough measures are being taken to tackle the deficit. The federal budget confirms investment of $105 million over two years for forestry innovation and market development.

This budget will help the forest sector become stronger, more competitive and diversified which is good news for high paying forestry jobs in coastal communities.  Read more

Nanaimo Mills Continue Difficult Battle

It has been a difficult five-year stretch for Nanaimo’s struggling forest industry. The collapse of the American housing market in 2007, the main market at the time for most of the province’s forest exports, hit local saw and pulp mills hard. A series of work curtailments, shutdowns and the layoff of hundreds of local forestry workers followed.

However, operations at Nanaimo’s four mills continue in the hope that the markets will revive and return the industry to past glory.
